We manufacture and install our gates throughout Gloucestershire and surrounding counties, including, Worcestershire, South Herefordshire, North Wiltshire and West Oxfordshire and prefer to make a site visit to determine the best method necessary for installation. If we are manufacturing and supplying gates and you are using your own installer, please remember the following points before placing a firm order, which will make the installation as simple as possible.
When measuring between buildings and walls, put a tape measure across the base of the total entrance width, also measure the total width at approximately the full height of the proposed gates. It doesn't harm to measure intermediate between these points, in case the wall or building bows drastically, although this is rare, it does happen. Measure accurately.
Consider wall plates if the gate is to be installed between the house or walls, especially if the concrete footings are high. If space permits between ground level and footings, we sometimes concrete a main post beneath ground, without disturbing the footings and anchor this post to the wall or building, ensuring a firm post for heavy gates. A good quality 4" X 3" wall plate will be large enough for gates up to four or five feet wide and six feet high, although, we sometimes use a 5" X 4" wall plate for our wider and heavier gates. It is important that the hinge plates have a good anchor with large, good quality screws. Don't use tee hinges on gates over three feet wide, they are not up to the task, we don't use them at all.
If the entrance width is wider than fourteen feet and you are considering tall gates, it is sometimes a good idea to incorporate a smaller pedestrian gate alongside the pair of main gates, especially when hung between buildings on wall plates.
