During the wet winter months, featheredge fencing can weigh over twice it's normal weight, so the finished fence needs to withstand this extra strain, especially during windy weather.
To give this fence extra stability, we concrete the posts at least 25% deeper beneath ground than standard and we also use four arris rails per bay if the fence line is in an exposed position. We also mortice the posts for the scarfed arris rails, a method far superior to the normal closeboard method of notching or nailing the rail on the front of the post. Also, we include a supported gravel board, counter-rail and capping.
We consider our featheredge fence a craftsman built fence which requires more skill and time to install than the standard closeboard fence and those which we installed 25 years ago, still looks good to go another 25 years. Also, our featheredge gates can be installed as driveway gates or side gates to compliment the featheredge fence.
Oak Featheredge fencing also available.
The price of our featheredge fence can vary depending on your requirements and pocket and if this style of fence is not your requirement, then perhaps the std builders type closeboard is for you.
The std builders style closeboard that we install use the normal notched posts, or birds mouth jointing method to secure the arris rails. Because we have repaired many of these std type closeboard fences, usually, because the nailed arris rails come away from the post when the fence is wet and heavy, we use our unique rail fixing design, this will prevent a collapsed fence during the winter gales.
Closeboard panels are also available. Please phone for details.

Featheredge fencing is sometimes erroneously known as closeboard fencing. Our featheredge fence is based on the older style design, which has always been known as featheredge, so we don't see why we should change it.
Over 25 years installing this kind of fence, we have changed various parts of the construction to suit customer's requirements, although, the basic tried and tested design remains the same.
Our featheredge is constructed on-site, which enables us to shorten the post positioning, according to underground services, tree roots etc.
